Oregon Vacation Day 12

We headed out the next morning after our continental breakfast, again heading south on 101.  We made a little detour about 8 miles west, just south of Bandon, to Cape Blanco.  It was gorgeous, but what you don't see is how windy is was and cold it felt.  Beautiful lighthouse!!

It really wasn't long and we were across the Oregon California border.  It was beginning to sink in that our vacation was coming to an end.  But, first we stopped and took in a little of the beach for the last time, and soaked up some of  that warm sun!

Oregon Vacation Day 11

This morning we had checked out of the room, and did a little shopping.  Cliff had asked one of the store clerks where the Japanese dock was, that washed ashore from last years tsunami.  We got directions where to park, and it was a good mile beach walk to it.

A little girl wrote in the sand, "Japan's gift to us" with a long arrow pointing to the dock.

It began to rain and Cliff and I (and others) began to walk back to our vehicle.  But, this guy stayed behind...

We had a little breakfast and then we were on our way back down the coatal highway 101.  We decided to stop at Cape Perpetua.  The rain hadn't let up, but that didn't stop us from hiking close to Devil's Churn.

After getting back in the vehicle, we discussed if we should head inland out of the rain, but we kept seeing little bits of blue sky over the ocean and decided to stay the course, south on 101.

Our next stop was at Heceta Head Lighthouse St. Park.  We hadn't planned to do the hike, and I suppose it's just as well, as the lighthouse was under shroud for restoration.  However, the weather was quite beautiful and actually warm.  We were glad we decided to continue our journey as planned.

At this same stop was a very interesting tree and beautiful forest!

We stopped for lunch in Gold Beach where the Mary D. Hume wreckage is.

Back on the road...the farther south more beautiful the weather.  Our next stop was Sunset Bay State Park...

Sunset Bay Below

We finally landed in Bandon for the evening.  Our favorite coastal village.  We struck out on a couple of motels...the rooms were not exactly desirable.  However, we ended up at the Bandon Inn...paid a little more for the room, but the room was wonderful and the view priceless, overlooking little Bandon and the Bay!

I was so excited to get some night shots of Bandon right off of the balcony...

The photo below doesn't capture many stars, but it does capture Bandon at night...around 10-11pm.  Everything closed except for a little bar...you can see a few people standing right outside it.

Oregon Vacation Day 10

Saying our good-byes with much appreciation of Daf and Cracker's hospitality, we leave Vernonia around 8 am.  We did a little grocery shopping, gassed the vehicle and grabbed some breakfast before we stopped to visit with Mom.  She was waiting for us in her apartment at the Beehive.  Normally she is out and about.  I can never reach her by phone most days it seems, as she stays so active.

I noticed on Mom's patio her beautiful flowers (Darlene planted for her...great job, sis!), and she had already placed the garden stake in her pot that Ashlee made.  It all looked so lovely together.

We visited for awhile and it was with great hesitation that we decided we should go.  I'm sad to have to say good-bye...but, before we do, Cliff takes a photo of the two of us together.  I love you, Mom!!

So we are off again and we head toward Tillamook, stopping at the Tillamook Forest Center.  We have been there several times before, but it's not only a fabulous place learning about the Tillamook Burn and logging  history, but it's a nice place to stretch your legs a bit.

Next stop was at the Tillamook Cheese Factory!  LOVED sampling all the cheese and couldn't leave without some...no, not cheese, but FUDGE!!  We both have sweet-tooths!

On our way again we decide to take a long route down the coast of Oregon and followed the Tillamook Bay around to Cape Meares where we visited the Octopus Tree!

We finally landed in Newport for the night...

...with a beautiful sunset!  It was a really nice way to end our day.

Oregon Vacation Day 9

Well, it was our last morning together eating around the Old Mill House Inn breakfast table.  More visiting with the Crowstons and David.  In our conversation, we explained to them that we went back to the fuel house at the mill pond and tried out some of our singing skills (lol).  Kathi had video on her camera of our songs, and was trying to share it with Mr. Crowston, but it was difficult to hear and not easy to see on the camera.  So, Mr. Crowston said, "well, why don't you all just sing it for me?!"  We all looked at each other, and after a little hesitation, we began singing "Edelweiss".  We didn't get but half way through the song and Mr. and Mrs. Crowston began to join in...David, while sitting on the stairs, also began to sing with us.  All I can say is that it was a beautiful moment to end our mini-reunion.

Marsha was the first to leave as she wanted to spend time with her dad for Father's Day before she had to catch her plane (It didn't occur to me until just now that Deborah, Kathi and I all have deceased father's).  Then Deborah and Sassy were on their way one direction and Kathi and I another.  Before Kathi took me back to Darlene's we stopped at Vernonia High School's Greenman Field and Stadium for one last photo.  It took me back to my cheerleading days (Deborah and I on the right, 1971-72 school year...Juniors).  You can see the Loggerman behind us and still in the same spot today.

Then it was time to get back to Daf and Crackers...my husband...and the weeks worth of laundry I needed to wash, before heading out the next morning back home to California.  It was also time to wind down and just have some good relaxing visiting time with my favorite sister...

...and my favorite husband!  =o]

Visits home to Vernonia never seem long enough, and yet, long enough!

Oregon Vacation Day 8 (part 2)

As hard as it was to say good-bye to Washington, it truly was a marvelous sight to see "Vernonia Schools".  Although construction is far from finished, you can see the amazing structure, with a beautiful backdrop of the Oregon sky behind.  The entrance to the building is on the far right.  The windows above the entrance are the library windows, and the yellow box protruding from the library is a enclosed glass reading room with a window seat looking outside.  We didn't get to go through the library as all of upstairs was barricaded with caution tape.  However, Ronda gave us the description of the library.  (Picture taken as soon as I stepped out of Kathi's vehicle)

Classes are separated by lower level K-6th grade, and 7th-12th the upper level.  The new school has 2 gymnasiums.  One small (in which looked pretty big to me) and the other HUMONGOUS!  The larger gym is large enough to fit two full size basketball courts (pictured below).

The smaller gym (grade school gym) is being finished first with the old VHS gym flooring, so all grades will have a gym to use when school starts this fall.  The high school gym (the larger of the two) won't be completed before the 2012-13 school year begins.  All classes will use the grade school gym until the high school one is completed.  We were getting excited about the future use of the gyms...great potential for future tournaments, and that would mean more revenue for Vernonia!!

The commons, where the students will eat their lunch, is a multipurpose area that also will be used for theater/drama and a gathering place.  It's quite spacious among having a fantastic view to a beautiful outside area.  Also there is a covered play area for those rainy days.

A better look of the outside play area looking out from the commons.

The classrooms were roomy, light and had nice views...perhaps too good of a view for those day-dreamers that have a hard time consentrating as it is.

Saying good-bye to the new Vernonia Schools (until we meet again next August)!

Now it was time for business and Kathi, Deborah, Norm (Norm's wife), Marsha and I went back to the Old Mill House Inn and gathered around the patio table on the deck.  Ideas began to fly.  Kathi did most of the leg work to get the "Give Back Reunion" idea started.  We think we (class of 1973) have a very good chance of pulling this off as a successful fundraiser for the Vernonia Schools next August.  So exciting!!!

Norm and his wife had to leave and we decided to go back to the "Fuel House" and play, I mean try some songs we had practiced.  When we arrived, there were two young men at the end of the building just outside one of the doors.  They seemed curious as to why 4 women of our age, with the same shirts on, were inside the abandoned, tagged fuel house.  They came in and right away started a conversation with us, asking why we were there.  Come to find out, one of the young men was a music major and also was a photographer and he was more than happy to video tape our song.  Think about it...we have not sung these songs together since high school and practiced just a couple of times.

Our last evening together was relaxing...ate some dessert (M&Ms and ice-cream & stawberries)...watched some home movies and chatted.  BUT, not like the old days.  We are much older now, and our bedtime was before mid-night.

Oregon Vacation Day 8 (Part 1)

Remember when I told you that Brooke was on the East Coast and David was left behind?  Have no fear!  Brooke saw to it that a host and hostess would take her place that surely would not only surprise us, but delight us so.  It was Mr. Crowston (Gordon, Brooke's father) and his wife Mrs. Crowston (Leilani)!  Mr. Crowston was our Driver's Ed Teacher, Boy's Counselor and Athletic Director at Vernonia High School during our high school years (69-73).  He was so loved by us then (and of course now), as his Christian character, and love for the students shined through every ounce of his being, every school day of the year.  We feel so blessed to have had him in our lives growing up.  Leilani is the sweetest and most charming of all people and we fell in love with her right away.  She also did a fantastic job preparing and serving our breakfasts.  Man, were we ever blessed that weekend spending it with the Crowstons!!

You may have noticed that we girls are all wearing the same T-shirt.  Kathi had our loggerman modified (we hired an artist) to look like a loggerlady and Kathi had the T's printed for each of us when we arrived.  We wore them proudly!!

We are all laughing because David took the shot and was getting uncomfortably close!  Still having fun!

I just want to also comment that at breakfast time, Mr. Crowston would sit down with us and visit.  He made a point to go around the table and encourage each of us.  He had told us of his difficult teen years and how certain men in the community helped him through to his adulthood.  He had much admiration for my Great Uncle Jim and my father, Wayne.  They had both taken him under their wing, so to speak, to encourage him in his teen and young adult life.  What a treasure to learn that, that of which I had never known before.  It touched my heart!

We had an appointment with Ronda for our last visit (tour) of Washington Grade School before it's demolished in July (2012).  Of our class, Norman Crawford, Deborah Banta Dustman, Marsha Sturdevant, Kathi Medges Knowles and myself  was a show.  Also, Ronda's sister, Tammy, came for the tour.  It was a warm reunion and the Washington Grade School halls soon filled with noise and laughter.  Below is a photo of Washington Grade School in the 60s taken by Dan Lawler (courtesy of Patti Lawler).

One of the things we noticed first were the graduation class photos all lined up on the hall walls taken down from the high school and now will be placed in the new "Vernonia Schools" building.

Then it was onto the tour visiting each classroom, library, gym, locker-rooms, basement play areas and the cafeteria.  Below Kathi demonstrates the hook-poles used to pull down the screens and maps, and we believe they are the very same hooks used in our youth.

Norm, Deb, Gayle, Kathi and Marsh sit on WGS stage for the last time...remembering the games, dances, plays and the rope we had to climb for P.E.

Someone wrote this on their classroom board before leaving for the last time.  We show our sorrowfulness for the inevitable.

Below is the kindergarten basement and the intercom down there,  used when we were going to school there.  Unknown to me, Kathi asked Ronda if the intercom still worked, and pretty soon I hear, "Gayle Welch, please come to the principal's office.  Gayle Welch, come to the office please!"  What a hoot!!

We had gone through every room in the building recalling our childhood school memories...laughing and sighing...singing and yes, eventually crying.  As we began to exit out the east wing, I could hardly utter the words, as I gripped the old wooden railing.  "Hey guys, do you realize how many times our hand slid down these rails?"  And then someone asked, "Gayle, are you crying?"  Yes, I was.  The realization that we would never step foot in the historic Washington Grade School  of Vernonia, Oregon again was no longer a thought, but a reality.  AND if I remember correctly there were others in our group also wiping their eyes.  You know who you are!

Oregon Vacation Day 7

It was time!  I could hardly stand it!  I would be meeting up with 3 of my high school best buds to have a weekend together at a local Bed and Breakfast, planning our 40th class reunion for next year.  We decided to first meet at the Vernonia Pioneer Museum where not only the OA Mill history is preserved, but also some of our personal family history.

My own personal family history was found...I was hoping it was still there.  It was Dad's taxidermy work.  He donated several of his pieces years ago and they are still on display.

After time at the museum, we decided we should check in at the Old Mill House Inn owned by one of our VHS friends and her husband, Brooke and David.  Brooke, however was not there as her daughter was having a baby on the East Coast and she wanted to be there for the event.  David, however, stayed behind to hold the fort down.

Marsha and I bunked in the "Pebble Creek" room.  It was so quaint and beautifully decorated with such care to detail.

Now checked in, it was time to PLAY and we were off to Lake Vernonia for a walk.  Yeah, I know that doesn't sound like playing, but wait until you see what we do before you judge!  =o]  Oh, and I don't normally wear my tennies with leopard print!  (photos below by Kathi)

Okay...so what did you expect from 56 and 57 year olds, anyway??  =o]  We soon entered the building in the background.  It is the "Fuel House" left behind from the OA Mill.  I haven't been inside it since I was a kid!  It was quite magical...trees growing up through the open roof, graffiti lining the bottom quarter of the walls and the acoustics were truly amazing inside.  What a playground for us...you will soon understand that statement later in my blog.

Here is a little taste of some of the playing around we did!  Click on the link below:
